David Clark from Lincolnshire County Council’s public health team says: “As winter sets in, respiratory viruses, including flu, have already begun circulating. It’s vitally important to take steps to stay well this winter. The following are some simple things you can do to prepare for the colder months.”
Top tips to stay well this winter
- Keep your home warm: Heat your home to at least 18°C (65°F). Focus on heating the living room during the day and the bedroom before sleep.
- Dress warmly: Wear several layers of light clothing. Don’t forget a hat, gloves, and scarf when going outside.
- Eat well: Have regular hot meals and drinks to maintain energy levels. Stock up on basic supplies for bad weather.
- Get your winter vaccinations: Many older people are eligible for free flu and covid jabs. You may also want to stock up on cold, flu and sore throat remedies.
- Stop the spread of germs: Regularly washing your hands can help stop the spread of illnesses. Use a tissue to catch coughs and sneezes.
- Stay active: Move around to keep warm. Avoid sitting still for long periods. However, take extra care outside when the ground is slippery.
- Check on others: Look out for vulnerable friends, family, and neighbours. A quick visit or call can help.
- Seek help if needed: Reach out for support if you’re struggling to keep warm. Connect to Support Lincolnshire offers information on help available locally.
