A reminder about the simple things we can all do to help infection prevention

Infection prevention plays a vital role in keeping all of us safe and International Infection Prevention Week, which runs from 13–19 October, aims to shine a light on infection prevention and its importance.

The theme for this year’s International Infection Prevention Week is ‘Moving the Needle on Infection Prevention’ and NHS Lincolnshire Integrated Care Board is keen to remind people of the things we can all do to support effective infection prevention.

“The first is hand hygiene, which is the most important way of preventing infection,” explains Jennie Clements, Lead Nurse, Health Protection, NHS Lincolnshire ICB.  “Hands can transfer germs onto every surface you touch, so it’s important to wash your hands with soap and water before meals and after going to the toilet, and don’t use alcohol gel to replace hand washing.

“Secondly, self-care is really important.  This means you should stay at home if you are unwell, making sure to drink fluids to keep hydrated.  It’s also vital to stay on top of your vaccinations, particularly as we go into the winter months, as they will help keep you and your family safe and well.

“Lastly, but by no means least, cleaning!  Keep your home and work environment clean, and remember to keep your home well ventilated, even when it’s cooler outside, by opening windows.  Germs love it when we spend time indoors, especially with other people, and will spread more quickly in an unventilated environment.”

Following the straightforward actions above has never been so important since infection prevention is key in the battle against the spread of healthcare-associated infections and outbreaks.

“Although it might not seem like much, the actions we can all easily take in our everyday lives really can make a difference,” adds Jennie.  “We’re all getting used to getting vaccinated regularly against diseases like Covid-19 and flu, but keeping yourself and your home clean, and practising self-care have an important role to play too.”
