Annual Mental Health Physical Health Checks for people with Severe Mental Illness (SMI)

If you live with a condition such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or psychosis, it is important to look after your physical health as well as your mental health. People with these mental health conditions can be more likely to have physical health problems. A yearly physical health check can help find problems early, so you can get the right care and support to stay well for longer.

During your check, you will be offered some simple health checks. These may include your height, weight, blood pressure, and a blood test. You can also have a friendly chat about how you are feeling and any health worries you may have. This might be about smoking, being active, eating well, sleeping, or how your medicine affects your body.

You can say no to any checks you do not want. You can choose what feels right for you, and you can ask questions at any time.

The appointment is friendly, private, and designed around you. It is a safe space where you can talk openly and get advice that suits your needs. If you are eligible and have not had your physical health check this year, contact your GP practice to book an appointment.
