We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website and we have designed it to be accessible. This means that you should be able to:
- change colours, contrast levels and fonts using browser or device settings
- zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
- navigate most of the website using a keyboard or speech recognition software
- listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.
ReachDeck Toolbar
We’ve added the ReachDeck toolbar to our website. If you struggle with reading, have a visual impairment, or prefer to read in your own language, the ReachDeck toolbar can help.
Click on the orange ‘speak’ button that you can see in the header of all our website pages. This will launch the ReachDeck toolbar. You will see it dock to the top of your screen. Now click on the first ‘pointed finger’ icon on that toolbar and hover your mouse pointer over any text on our site to hear it read out loud.
The ReachDeck toolbar will help you to read and translate the content on our website. Its features include:
- Text-to-speech: click on or select any text to hear it read aloud
- Translation: translate content into over 100 languages
- Text magnification: enlarge text and hear it read out loud
- MP3 generation: convert selected text into an MP3 audio file
- Screen mask: reduce glare with a tinted mask
- Web page simplifier: remove clutter from the screen. Display only the main text
- Picture dictionary: displays pictures related to text selected on the page
If you need support, head over to Texthelp’s dedicated support site to find lots of useful articles on ReachDeck.

Compliance status
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.
Non-accessible content:
The following items are currently non-compliant, although we are actively working to address these issues as part of an ongoing programme to improve the accessibility of this website.
- When using ReachDeck at 400% zoom, content in the tool has to be scrolled to see all features (WCAG 1.4.10 Reflow)
- Some PDF and/or documents are not fully accessible:
- the structure of content is not always available to assistive technology, which makes the content difficult to understand and navigate for users of screen readers (WCAG Info and relationships 1.3.1 and Meaningful sequence 1.3.2)
- the reading order of the content is not always logical, which means some content does not make sense when read out by text-to-speech software (WCAG Meaningful sequence 1.3.2)
- images do not always have text alternatives, which means some content is not available when using text-to-speech software (WCAG Text alternatives 1.1.1)
- the text does not always meet display requirements (WCAG 1.4.8 – Visual presentation) and includes use of decorative items (WCAG 1.1.1 – Non text content)
- underlined text is used when link is not a hyperlink (WCAG 1.4.1 – Use of Colour)
- incorrectly tagged items (WCAG 1.3.1 – Info and Relationships)
- use of italicised text (WCAG 1.4.5 – Images of text)
- merged cells used within tables (WCAG 1.3.1 – Info and Relationships, WCAG 2.4.6 Headings and labels)
- colour contrast (WCAG 1.4.3 – Contrast minimum and WCAG 1.4.6 Contrast enhanced)
Other items which may affect the accessibility of this website include:

Content that is not within the scope of the accessibility regulations
PDFs and other documents
Many of our older PDFs do not meet accessibility standards. The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services. We do have plans to remove or replace some of the PDFs with more accessible content alternatives. Wherever possible, we avoid PDFs. Instead, we create content as structured web pages in HTML.
Videos
Some of our older videos do not meet accessibility standards because they do not have captions. The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix videos published before 23 September 2020. We are actively working to add captions to the most popular older videos.
From external websites
Some parts of this site link to or use content provided by other websites and we cannot guarantee that these resources are fully accessible.
