At Lincolnshire ICB, we’re proud to champion the vital role paramedics play in our general practice teams. As healthcare continues to change, paramedics have become an essential part of multidisciplinary teams, bringing their unique expertise and experience directly into primary care.
A new chapter for paramedics
Paramedics in general practice bring a wealth of experience in emergency care, clinical decision-making, and patient assessment. They manage both acute and chronic conditions, carry out home visits, and support vulnerable patients. Their work eases the pressure on GP services and improves access to care for people across Lincolnshire.
Working as part of general practice teams, paramedics join forces with GPs, nurses, and other professionals to offer joined-up, patient-focused care. They assess and treat a wide range of health issues, from minor illnesses to complex conditions, and support patients with long-term illnesses like diabetes and heart disease.
Voices from the field
Dean Darbon, an Advanced Paramedic Practitioner at Beacon Medical Practice in Skegness, spoke about his role:
“Being part of the Clinical Practitioners within general practice in Primary Care allows me to use my skills in a different but equally rewarding way. I can build relationships with patients over a longer term, helping them manage their health proactively rather than just responding to emergencies.
Working at an Advanced level and being a non-medical independent paramedic prescriber also helps reduce further delays in a patient’s treatment. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that I’m making a real difference to people’s lives, whether it’s through a home visit to an elderly patient or supporting someone with a long-term condition to stay well.”
Benefits to the community
- Improved access to care – Paramedics help cut waiting times by seeing patients who may not need a GP.
- Better patient outcomes – Their urgent care skills ensure patients get quick, appropriate treatment.
- Support for vulnerable patients – Home visits allow care for those who can’t easily attend the surgery.
- Less strain on emergency services – By managing conditions in primary care, paramedics help avoid unnecessary hospital visits.
Working together for better care
The Lincolnshire ICB remains committed to collaboration across healthcare roles. Bringing paramedics into general practice shows how new approaches can strengthen the system and meet the needs of a growing and ageing population.
