How social prescribing helped Amanda rebuild her confidence

Social prescribing is changing lives across the UK. For Amanda, it was a lifeline during a difficult time. She had never heard of social prescribing before. But after meeting Elena, a Social Prescribing Link Worker, everything began to change.

Meeting Elena: The first step

Amanda was struggling with anxiety. Leaving the house felt overwhelming. Public spaces caused her distress. She had lost confidence in herself. When she first met Elena, Amanda described herself as a “blubbering wreck.” But Elena listened with patience and kindness. She didn’t rush or pressure Amanda. Instead, she gave her space to speak and feel heard.

This caring approach gave Amanda the courage to try something new.

Taking small steps with support

Elena helped Amanda ease back into daily life. They visited different places together. Elena always reassured Amanda that if she wanted to leave, that was completely fine. One of their first stops was a low-impact exercise class. The group of women there welcomed Amanda with warmth.

In just a few weeks, Amanda began attending the group on her own.

She slowly started to challenge her anxious thoughts. When she felt worried, she reminded herself, “No one is looking at you. They have better things to do. Just get on with it.” This shift in mindset made a real difference.

Confidence, community and new goals

With regular support, Amanda grew more confident. She reconnected with others. She felt less alone and more in control of her life.

“I still get anxious,” she said, “but I know I can’t stay in the house knitting forever.”

Amanda now sets goals for herself. One of them is to visit a close friend in Egypt on her own. It is a big dream, but one she believes is possible thanks to the progress she has made.

A message of gratitude

Amanda credits Elena and social prescribing for her transformation. In her own words:

“Eleanor, without your help, I would not have achieved any of this. You are worth your weight in gold.”

What is social prescribing?

Social prescribing links people to non-medical support in their communities. This can include:

  • Local groups and clubs
  • Mental health support
  • Exercise and activity sessions
  • Help with housing or money worries

Social prescribing can improve mental health, boost confidence and reduce feelings of isolation.
