NHS Lincolnshire Integrated Care Board is encouraging parents and carers across the county to ensure their children are up to date with their HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccination as schools approach the May half‑term break.
The HPV vaccine, offered routinely to all children in Year 8, protects against a range of cancers caused by HPV, including cervical, head and neck, anal and genital cancers. With the Lincolnshire school‑aged immunisation team due to be visiting local schools throughout the summer term, the ICB is reminding families that now is the ideal time to check consent forms, respond promptly, and make sure no child misses out.
“The HPV vaccine is one of the most effective ways we can protect young people from several types of cancer later in life. As we head into the May half‑term, we’re asking parents to take a moment to ensure they’ve completed the vaccination consent form. It’s a simple step that provides long‑lasting protection,” explains Karen Goy, Lead Nurse for Quality and Risk – Vaccination Programme, NHS Lincolnshire Integrated Care Board.
Why the HPV vaccine matters:
- HPV is responsible for around 5% of all cancers worldwide.
- The vaccine has been shown to reduce cervical cancer rates by almost 90% in vaccinated cohorts.
- Protection is most effective when given before exposure to the virus, which is why the vaccine is offered in early adolescence.
“We know families are busy, especially at this time of year, but ensuring your child receives the HPV vaccine is one of the most important things you can do for their long‑term health.
“Remember to look out for the HPV vaccination consent form from your child’s school and to complete and return it as soon as possible. If your child has missed their HPV vaccination, you can contact the Lincolnshire School Aged Immunisation Service to arrange a catch-up appointment,” adds Karen.
Parents can contact the Lincolnshire School Aged Immunisation Service (SAIS) by telephone 01522 572950 or visit the team’s website Immunisations :: Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust.
Young people who missed their vaccination when at school can still receive it through their GP practice. The HPV vaccine is available for free on the NHS for all girls up until their 25th birthday and also for boys born after 1 September 2006 up until their 25th birthday.
