Summer brings longer days, warmer weather, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. But rising temperatures also bring health risks that are easy to overlook. To help you stay well during the warmer months, Chris Kenny, Superintendent Pharmacist at Lincolnshire Co-op, shares practical advice you can follow.
“Summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors, but it’s important to take care of your health when the temperatures rise,” says Chris.
“A bit of preparation goes a long way. Enjoy the summer and look after your health.”
Whether you’re heading to the beach, enjoying a family barbecue, or staying active in the garden, here are some essential tips to keep in mind:
1. Stay hydrated
Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water each day to stay hydrated. If you’re spending time outside or being physically active, increase your intake. Dehydration can sneak up quickly in the heat, especially for children, older adults, and those with existing health conditions.
2. Use sunscreen properly
Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher before heading out. Reapply every two hours, and more often if you’re swimming or sweating. Don’t forget areas like your ears, neck, and the tops of your feet.
3. Dress for the heat
Wear lightweight, breathable clothing, and protect your eyes with sunglasses. A wide-brimmed hat can shield your face and neck from direct sunlight, helping you stay cooler and reducing your risk of sunburn.
4. Keep food fresh and safe
Warm weather increases the risk of food poisoning. Store perishable items in a cool box or fridge, and avoid leaving food out in the sun. Wash your hands before and after handling food, especially when outdoors.
5. Choose the right time to exercise
Avoid physical activity during the hottest part of the day (usually between 11am and 3pm). Instead, exercise early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler and more comfortable.
6. Review your medications
Some medicines can increase sun sensitivity or may be affected by high temperatures. Speak to your pharmacist if you’re unsure how the heat might impact your medication. Keeping medicines stored correctly is just as important as taking them on time.
