NHS Lincolnshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) is inviting people with a stoma, those using Transanal Irrigation (TAI) or catheter products, and their carers to share their views on stoma, bowel, and catheter care across Lincolnshire.
The new survey collects feedback from patients and carers. It aims to show what works well, what needs improvement, and how services could better meet local needs.
A stoma is a surgical opening on the skin that allows waste to leave the body into a bag. People rely on these bags and related products every day. TAI is a prescribed procedure that flushes the lower bowel with water. It supports people with chronic constipation or faecal incontinence. A catheter is a thin, flexible tube that drains urine from the bladder. People may use different types of catheters and accessories depending on their condition, comfort, and lifestyle.
These products are currently available on prescription. Patients can collect them from community pharmacies or dispensing GP practices, or receive home deliveries from Direct Appliance Contractors (DACs). As part of its role in planning and funding NHS services, the ICB is reviewing how stoma and TAI products and services are provided across the county.
This review aims to make prescribing more consistent, improve patient experience, ensure timely access to professional support, and reduce waste. One option being considered is a new service to help manage appliance prescribing more effectively.
A spokesperson for NHS Lincolnshire ICB said:
“We want to ensure that everyone using stoma, TAI, and catheter products receives the right support and the most appropriate products. By listening directly to patients and carers, we can understand their experiences and make decisions that reflect what matters most to them. Their feedback is essential and will help us improve the quality and consistency of services across Lincolnshire.”
