World Hepatitis Day 2025

World Hepatitis Day takes place each year on 28 July. It is a global moment to raise awareness of viral hepatitis and unite communities to call on decision makers to prioritise its elimination. This year’s theme is: let’s break down the barriers holding us back from a hepatitis-free world.

We already have fast and accurate tests, effective and affordable treatments, and a proven vaccine that could prevent 95 percent of newborns from contracting hepatitis B.

But too many people still face obstacles. Low awareness, misinformation, myths and stigma stop people from getting the care they need. These same issues lead to inaction by decision makers.

Let’s break it down. Together, we can end the stigma around hepatitis and make sure no one is left behind.

Let’s break it down so everyone understands that eliminating hepatitis is not only possible but achievable if we all work together.

Why Hepatitis deserves action

  • Hepatitis is the leading cause of liver cancer
  • Each year, over 1.3 million people die from hepatitis B and C
  • More than 300 million people live with hepatitis, and most are unaware
  • Hepatitis is the second deadliest virus in the world

Many people live with hepatitis C without knowing. Even without symptoms, the virus can harm your liver and lead to serious conditions like liver failure or liver cancer. Hepatitis C affects the liver but can be cured with a simple course of tablets.
