Gemma’s Type 2 Diabetes Remission with the NHS Programme

Background: Struggling with Type 2 Diabetes

Gemma had a history of gestational diabetes, and when her daughter turned five, she was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. As a carb lover, she found it difficult to control her diet, leading to significant weight gain. The reality of being denied life insurance due to her condition made her realise she needed to make a change.

Determined to improve her health, Gemma initially lost 3 stone by having a protein shake for breakfast, a light snack, and a small meal daily. She also took on the 1 Million Steps Challenge for Diabetes. Despite this progress, she hit a plateau. Although she had brought her HbA1c down from 55mmol/mol to 43mmol/mol while on Metformin, she wanted to make a more lasting change. Seeking further help, she reached out to her GP.

Discovering the NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme

Gemma contacted her GP through ‘Ask My GP’, where a Clinical Pharmacist informed her about the NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme. At first, she was sceptical. “It seemed too good to be true—I even thought it might be a scam,” she admits. However, after confirming with her GP, she felt reassured and signed up.

Adapting to the Total Diet Replacement (TDR) Phase

The initial two weeks on the Total Diet Replacement (TDR) phase were tough. “I craved foods I wouldn’t normally eat, like kebabs!” she recalls. Breaking the habit of eating at night after putting her children to bed was particularly challenging.

To manage cravings, she experimented with different strategies: Freezing shakes to make them feel more like a meal Planning meal times strategically before hunger kicked in Avoiding mindless eating by stopping automatic snacking Chewing sugar-free gum to trick her brain into feeling satisfied

Despite initial struggles, she remained determined. “When I commit to something, I’m all in. Giving up was never an option,” she says. Even while attending two 60th birthdays and a wedding, she stuck to her plan by bringing her shakes while others enjoyed buffets and barbecues.

Health Improvements and Weight Loss Success

The results have been life-changing for Gemma: Lost over 4 stone No more bloating and mood swings Increased confidence and improved self-image

“I never imagined I’d lose this much weight. My ‘skinny jeans’—which I’d kept for years—are now too big!” she shares. Shopping is no longer about covering up in oversized clothing—she’s excited to rediscover her personal style.

Type 2 Diabetes Remission: A Major Milestone

At her latest diabetic review, Gemma’s HbA1c had dropped to 31mmol/mol, meaning she had successfully reversed her Type 2 Diabetes. As a result, her Metformin dosage was reduced to one tablet, twice a day. She has a follow-up review in three months to ensure her levels remain stable as she reintroduces food.

Advice for Others on the Programme

For those starting their remission journey, Gemma offers simple yet powerful advice: “The first two weeks are the hardest, but push through! Once you break the craving barrier and get into a routine, the benefits make it all worthwhile.”
