Today, Friday 12th May, is International Nurses Day, and the NHS in Lincolnshire will be celebrating the extraordinary difference nursing make to countless lives every day of the year.

International Nurses Day is held on the birthday of Florence Nightingale every year and is led globally by the International Council of Nurses.  Other than celebrating the enormous contribution made by nurses, this year’s celebration will focus on the future of nursing.

“Our nurses in Lincolnshire and across the country make a huge difference to the lives of patients and their loved ones every single day, performing tirelessly whatever the situation,” comments Martin Fahy, Director of Nursing and Quality, NHS Lincolnshire ICB.

“Having started my career in nursing I understand what is required to undertake this most crucial role within the NHS, and I am lucky enough to have worked with some fantastic nursing colleagues during my career to-date, who are the life blood of the NHS.”

‘Our Nurses.  Our Future’ is the theme of this year’s International Nurses Day which will look to the future of nursing and what is needed to get there, as well as what this will mean for nursing and healthcare.

“It’s really important that we shine a light on the work our amazing nurses do for the NHS and beyond on behalf of patients.  At the same time we want to look forward to a great future for nursing within the NHS and a continuation of the vital role our nurses perform.

Today also marks the first ever Lincolnshire Nursing in the Community Conference, which is being held to celebrate health and care professionals working in the county.

“I am excited to be attending the conference where, as well as celebrating International Nurses Day, we will also be reflecting on the priorities of the community nursing programme within the NHS,” adds Martin.

“In particular the conference will be showcasing best practice and looking at the essential role community services have in delivering local and national NHS plans, and I am looking forward to meeting and celebrating with my wonderful nursing colleagues.

“The key thing for me is the difference our nurses make to people’s lives every single day of the year, whether that’s in the community or in our hospitals.  Irrespective of the setting, nurses’ unwavering commitment changes lives and that should be celebrated,” adds Martin.
